Hamburg Resident Facing Many Criminal Charges
A 28-year-old Hamburg man is in custody after a brief chase involving police on Oct. 11, according to sources in Washington Township. New Jersey authorities arrested the man on suspicion of DUI after he was stopped on Route 46. He faces multiple charges and has since been released to a responsible adult pending a court date at the Washington Township Municipal Court.
According to the report offered by Washington Township police, an officer was conducting a vehicle stop on Route 46 West when he apparently noticed another vehicle heading westbound in the eastbound lane. The officer terminated his initial stop and proceeded to chase the vehicle, which was reportedly traveling with a flat front tire. The vehicle came to a stop near the intersection of East Avenue.
It appears the man may have refused to take a breath test, but officers on the scene believed the man to be intoxicated behind the wheel, so he was arrested and taken into custody. He now faces a slew of charges in addition to the DUI charge, including reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash, failure to report a crash, failure to submit breath samples, and several other minor traffic infractions. No court date was reported.
A DUI charge can have a significant effect on the accused person. If this man is found guilty, he could lose his driver’s license, face fines and even go to jail. However, New Jersey prosecutors bear the burden of proof and will have to provide compelling evidence that the man committed the crimes charged. His counsel will focus on ensuring the man’s legal rights are protected at every stage of the proceedings while pursuing the most favorable result possible.
